Don't dilly dally if you're heading abroad this summer!

There is significant pressure on the passport system this summer.

Currently there are over 200,000 people waiting on passports.

A travel expert is advising new parents to apply for a baby's passport as soon as the child is born.

Fianna Fail Senator Lisa Chambers has highlighted the issue as she waited almost 4 months for her baby boy's passport.

"We have to acknowledge there clearly is a backlog, it's not just me or parents saying it, it's coming up in the Dáil and the Seanad almost on a weekly basis."

"We need to bring down the wait times," she added.

The Department of Foreign Affairs insists the problems are due to incomplete applications.

They say four in ten passport forms are sent in incorrectly and this is a major reason why over 200 thousand people are experiencing delays.

Editor of Air and Travel Magazine Eoghan Corry says those delays have eased but there are ways parents can make it quicker.

He said you don't need to wait for a baby to get a PPS number, and his advice is to "get the application in as soon as their born."
