New opinion poll shows Sinn Fein overtake Fine Gael

A new opinion poll suggests Sinn Fein is now the second most popular party - ahead of Fine Gael.

The Times Ireland edition and Panelbase survey has Fianna Fail in the lead on 23 per cent.

Sinn Fein are just behind on 21 while Fine Gael are on 19.

The poll of over a thousand voters was conducted online between January 24th and 30th.

Sinn Féin's Mary Lou McDonald appears to be the most popular among parties leaders, with 34% of people happy with her performance

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar is on 33%, followed by Fianna Fáil leader Micheál Martin on 31%.

Eamon Ryan of The Green Party is further back on 27%, with Labour leader Brendan Howlin on 15%.

Today's survey is the third opinion poll of this General Election campaign.
