There'll be less religion taught in Irish schools as the new Primary Curriculum Framework is rolled out.

Education Minister Norma Foley this morning unveiled the framework, which has an increased emphasis on foreign languages and well-being.

Minister Foley says while religion hours are being cut, flexi-time offers schools the chance to focus on other subjects:

'There is a reduction in the hours for religion, but there is also more anatomy, or more agency given to the schools around flexi- time'.

'So there is flexi- time available to the schools where the schools, and they will know best what areas need to be more augmented, that could be across any area'.

Various elements of the programme will be introduced into schools on a phased basis, and students will be encouraged to be both an active learner and an active citizen.

The Department of Education says the framework sets out the vision and principles for a redeveloped, modern curriculum.

President Michael D Higgins has also weighed in on on the debate surrounding an updated school curriculum.

He has said schools should teach sexuality in the 'fullest sense'.

His comments follow remarks from Taoiseach Leo Varadkar that it "makes sense" to teach kids about transgender people.
