The Tánaiste has rubbished a suggestion road charges will be introduced to make up for taxes lost on petrol and diesel sales.

The Irish Daily Mail had reported Road Usage Charges will be introduced as more people move to electric vehicles.

A study outlining a number of options, including not introducing charges, has been carried out by Transport Infrastructure Ireland.

But Tánaiste Micheál Martin says the Government absolutely won't be going down that route:

"That won't be happening."

"First of all, that's a study. There's no proposals that have come before government. I'm not anti-car, I'm anti-fossil fuels."

"I think there's two things we need to do. We need to continually increase the take up of EVs and then we need to develop, as we are, the public transport network; in terms of trains, busses and there's a lot of investment going into that, and also active travel."
