Simon Harris is urging people not to panic.
Three schools in Co. Clare are shut today after four members of the same family contracted Covid 19, after returning from a holiday in Northern Italy.
One primary school and a secondary school in Co Clare informed parents by text that they are to close for 14 days as a precaution after a person in each school tested positive for the virus.
Efforts are now underway to trace anyone the four people may have been in contact with.
It brings to six the total number of confirmed cases in the Republic so far.
Health Minister Simon Harris said schools and businesses shouldn't close over coronavirus unless they're told to do so by the HSE.
''There will not be a one size fits all solution for schools, as this situation unfolds,'' he said.
''People shouldn't be taking unilateral actions, schools and businesses need not shut.''
''If they need to shut they'll be advised by the public health office.''
