New European Commission rules on vehicle safety could lead to 25,000 lives being saved.

All new cars are to be fitted with devices to automatically make them keep to the speed limit, while intelligent speed assistance, lane keeping technology and advanced emergency braking are to become mandatory by 2022.

It is hoped the measures could help to avoid 140,000 serious injuries by 2038.

Sean Duke, who is a science journalist, says it is a significant move.

"It seems to be the biggest thing that's happened in road safety since seat belts were brought in as a compulsory thing. A lot of the technologies have been around for a while but I guess the difference now is that they're putting them all together in this package and that it's going to be a requirement. There's quite a number of things that they're looking at, lots of different technologies being brought to bear."
