SSE Airtricity is putting all of its profits this financial year into helping families struggling with the cost of energy.

It comes just over a month after the company raised its prices for electricity customers by 36 percent and gas bills by 39 percent.

It has more than 700,000 homes and businesses across the island of Ireland and raised its gas and electricity prices in October.

SSE Airticity has made a profit of €17 million according to its half-year results today, but is putting the money into its energy support programme, as the cost of living crisis bites.

Today, it announced millions of euro will go to St Vincent de Paul and the company's own hardship fund.

Head of Communications at Bonkers dot IE, Darragh Cassidy, says while its a positive move by SSE, it won’t have a major impact on its customers bills:

"People are really, really gonna feel it over the next few weeks when they get their winter bills, and the announcement from SSE Airtricity doesn't really change that."
