Meanwhile, the Junior Cert has been cancelled.

The Leaving Cert exams have been postponed until late July or August.

Today, Education Minister Joe McHugh confirmed that the Leaving exams will take place on either the last week of July or the first week in August.

All Leaving Cert practical exams have also been rescheduled. Those exams in subjects like History, Geography, Art, PE and Construction, will take place some time in the summer but exact dates for those exams have yet to be decided.

Elsewhere, the Junior Cert exams have been cancelled for this year. Instead, they'll be replaced with school-based exams and assessments which are to take place early in the next school year.

All schools will also remain closed until further notice.

The Department of Education says these decisions have been made based on advice from the National Public Health Emergency Team.
