Tinder has announced it is going to offer users the opportunity to scan ID to verify their identity.

This follows a successful system in Japan, where users have to prove they are over 18 years old to use the dating app.

For now it is going to be an optional feature, with Tinder describing it as a test-and-learn approach.

However there are calls for it to be made compulsory.

Mary Crilly, CEO of the Sexual Violence Centre in Co. Cork, thinks the app's owners should go further:

"I think it should be mandatory and I think it's what people have been looking for for a long time.

"The benefit of that, it kind of stops offenders from hiding, which they are doing constantly and they feel that they're not being held to account.  They have a sense that they're not accountable, that they can hide and they can groom online and do whatever they want, and nobody knows how they are."

Tinder says it will seek expert advice to see which forms of ID are acceptable from state to state.
