Women's Rugby is set to bring in navy shorts for the team's new kit, to help with worries around periods.

Sport Ireland has welcomed the decision.

The Women's Rugby team will wear navy shorts from next season, in a move that's hoped will help reduce players' worries around periods.

Sports Journalist Kathleen McNamee, says the IRFU had planned to bring in the kit change sooner, but there were manufacturing delays with their kit supplier:

"The womens' fifteens and the sevens team will wear the darker shorts from the start of the 2023/24 season. They wanted to bring it in for the Six Nations this year but they couldn't because of a backlog due to Covid."

CEO of Sport Ireland Dr Una May, says it's a simple measure that will hopefully allow women to focus fully on their performance on the field when they're on their period.

"It's just another thing that shouldn't be a problem. It should be easy to solve. We should be able to change the colour of their shorts. Girls shouldn't be expected to play in white shorts and it's an easy solution. So we're really delighted the IRFU are looking into it for the senior team."

Following an 'Address the Dresscode' campaign in the UK Organisers of Wimbledon announced that it's dropping its all-white dress code and allow female tennis players to wear dark undershorts at this year's tournament.
