And LBC Presenter Clive Bull certainly didn't take his suggestion well
A caller to a British radio station baffled listeners yesterday, after suggesting England should go to war with the Republic over the Northern Irish border dilemma post-Brexit.
The UK government has struggled to come up with a solution to what happens to the border between the North and the Republic of Ireland after Britain leaves the EU.
Given it is the only land border between the UK and an EU state, the issue has often dominated discussions of Brexit, with claims that border checks would have to return to the region.
Discussing the topic on air, LBC presenter Clive Bull said that the issue had "clearly turned out to be more complicated" than it seemed in 2016, before the vote.
But a caller, named Trevor, said that "it's only been complicated because it's been made complicated."
He added: "There's been obstacles put in our way all the time.
"All we have to do is turn around to the EU and say 'we're not going to put a hard border there - if you want it, you put it up'.
"We shouldn't be dictated to by the four or five million Irish. They're going to lose more than we will."
Presenter Clive said that not having a border in Northern Ireland didn't mean that the UK was "taking back control of our borders".
Trevor replied: "What we're saying is we're not going to renege on the Good Friday Agreement.
"There is a simple answer. We turn around to southern Ireland and say 'right, so what you're saying then, if we have a hard border you want to go to war."
Clive said: "Well, nobody mentioned this during the referendum. This is your position now, that we suggest to the Republic that there might be a war?"
Trevor replied: "At the end of day, we voted to leave."
While Trevor's opinion and knowledge on the matter may be very limited... and foolish...
There's no denying the problem the post-brexit border is posing is certainly proving quite the thorn in the side of both Countries.
