Will the move raise the issue in Ireland?

Canadian MPs have overwhelmingly passed a bill to legalise cannabis for recreational use by 205 votes to 82.

The legislation will now move onto the Canadian Senate, and must receive royal assent by the governor general (The Queen of England's representative) before becoming law.

It's though that the legislation may become lawful by September.

If the bill does pass as expected, Canada will be the first G7 country to legalise cannabis. Something which was promised by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau promised during his election campaign.

Mr Trudeau has himself admitted to smoking cannabis "five or six times." He has insisted his government would move to legalise the production, sale and consumption of the drug this year.

Last week, the government rejected 13 out of 46 amendments to the bill proposed by the Senate after several months of study, with Mr Trudeau's health minister rising to defend home cultivation of cannabis.

"Canadians are allowed to make beer at home, or wine," health minister Ginette Petitpas Taylor said on Friday.

"It is already possible for Canadians to grow cannabis for medical purposes and we absolutely believe the legislation should be consistent when it comes to recreational cannabis."

Growing calls

The Canadian move comes amidst growing calls in Ireland to introduce similar laws, from Medicinal cannabis campaigners such Vera Twomey of Co. Cork, who secured a licence for the medication for her ill daughter.

Ms Twomey has been invited to speak in the House of Commons in London tomorrow so she can explain the benefits of the alternative medicine in treating conditions such as severe epilepsy.

Cannabis in Ireland is currently illegal for recreational purposes. While use for medical purposes requires case-by-case approval by the Minister for Health.
