Garda dies after being shot in Castlerea, Co. Roscommon

A man has been arrested.

A Garda has been killed following a shooting in Co. Roscommon. It happened in Castlerea in just before midnight on the 17th of June.

A man in his 40s has been arrested following the shooting in Castlerea last night.

The garda was shot just before midnight last night on the main street in Castlerea in Roscommon – close to the garda station.

He was treated by emergency services and in the past hour gardai have now confirmed that he has passed away.
In a statement they say - it’s with deepest sadness that An Garda Siochana confirms the death of our colleague.

The area on the main street has been sealed off in Castlerea and technical officers are on site examining the scene.
A man has been arrested and has been taken to Castlerea Garda Station for questioning.

Gardai are now trying to establish the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

They say they will confirm the identity of the garda once all his family and relatives have been informed.

Tributes.

The Taoiseach has led tributes to him, saying his thoughts are with all those grieving as a result of the shooting.

Leo Varadkar said gardai put themselves on the frontline every day and sometimes they make the ultimate sacrifice in the course of their duties.

Meanwhile the Justice Minister says he’s shocked and saddened at the shooting, saying the garda's heroism will never be forgotten.

Charlie Flanagan described him as a brave garda who died protecting the community.

It's understood that the victim joined the force in 1995 and was an experienced officer.

He is survived by his father, sister and three brothers.
