Deirdre Jacob hasn't been seen for 20-years

The investigation has been upgraded due to new information being received by gardai

Gardai have confirmed today that they have upgraded the disappearance of Deirdre Jacob to a murder investigation, 20-years after the search began.

Deirdre was 18-years-old when she went missing from her home in Roseberry, Newbridge, Co Kildare on 28 July 1998 at around 3pm.

The investigation has been upgraded due to new information being received by gardai.

Chief Superintendent Brian Sutton said in a statement: "Deirdre Jacob was 18 years of age when she was last seen on 28th July 1998 as she walked to her home in Newbridge, Co Kildare.

"She was a young woman starting off her life, who had just completed one year at St Mary’s University, Twickenham, London.

"Deirdre had enjoyed her life in London and was looking forward to returning to college that September when her life was taken away on or after the 28 July 1998."

Deirdre's parents Bernie and Michael made an emotional plea on the 20th anniversary of her disappearance last month.

No trace of the young woman has ever been found since she vanished without trace 20 years ago.

The investigation team can be contacted at Kildare Garda Station, 045 521222 or the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666 111.

Meanwhile, The Irish Times is reporting that gardaí investigating the murder have identified a chief suspect.

This suspect is reportedly from Leinster and has spent time in prison for violent crime against women.
