The new measures are set to be implemented next year.
Traffic flow on the M50 will soon be noticeably slower, as Transport Infrastructure Ireland look to introduce measures to lower the risk of accidents and traffic jams while improving traffic flow.
In areas where the speed limit is 100 km/h, motorists will soon be encouraged to drive slower with plans to introduce an alternating speed limit between 60 and 80 km/h to reduce the risk of incidents, as reports The Times Irish Edition.
The new system would allow "speed limits to be changed throughout the day" depending on how busy the road is.
Speaking about these planned changes, a spokesperson has said: "Variable speed limits also help in reducing the stop-start actions of motorists when driving."
The Department of Transport are currently planning legislation to help the Gardaí enforce this lower speed limit.
