There's a protest in Dublin today

Housing charity Threshold is dealing with almost 1,800 live cases of tenancy termination.

The eviction ban lapsed from midnight last night.

Concerns have been raised that ending the ban will lead to a spike in homelessness figures.

John-Mark McCafferty, chief executive of Threshold, says the housing market is far too restricted.

He said: "Four or five years ago, prior to covid, there were options for people in the market.

"Tenancy terminations was an issue but what the real problem now is the number of landlords selling and leaving the market. That coupled with the lack of supply coming through in the private rental sector."

Hundreds of people are taking part in a protest in Dublin to highlight the country’s housing crisis.

The rally was organised by the cost of living coalition. That is made of up trade unions, advocacy groups and homelessness agencies.

Demonstrators are calling for immediate action from the Government to address the shortage of housing.

People at the protest say the eviction ban should be reinstated.

One said: "The government claim that it's a longterm aim that they have to try and improve the situation but I don't believe them for a minute."

Another said There's people struggle to buy homes so if they're not able to keep renting then where else are they going to go?"
