April 18th may soon become 'Republic Day'

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has raised the prospect of a 'Republic Day,' celebrating Ireland's independence from Britain.

The State became the Republic of Ireland on April 18th, 1949. Ending the last remnants of British Rule over the island.

Speaking at an event to mark the 69th anniversary on Wednesday night, Mr Varadkar said both the 70th anniversary next year and the 75th anniversary in 2024 should be marked as State occasions.

However, he said the day would need to remain low key except on significant anniversaries, given St Patrick’s Day and Easter Monday fall around a similar time.

Would you embrace the concept of 'Republic Day' as a Sate occasion to celebrate Ireland's independence?
