Trail of destruction: The fallout from Storm Ali

Storm Ali left a trail of mayhem across Ireland

Storm Ali was short, but it packed a serious punch.

Up to 186,000 homes, farms and businesses were left without power as strong gusts of wind wreaked havoc across the country.

Met Éireann recorded the strongest gust in Galway at 8:30am, at over 140km/h.

The extreme weather forced the cancellation of Day Two of the National Ploughing Championships in Tullamore, due to public safety concerns. The first time in the event's history that an entire day has been called off.

Motorists were plagued by dozens of road closures around Ireland. These were due to fallen trees after wind gusts of 130km/h.

Airports around the country were also affected, with flights being cancelled and dangerous conditions witnessed on runways:

The aftermath

The clean up has begun, and it will be a stressful few hours ahead for emergency services, as they begin to clear countless fallen trees.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Met Éireann say winds will fall light to moderate variable tonight with dry and clear spells in many parts.

Scattered showers are due along the north and northwest coast wih lows of 6-9 degrees.
