The case has faced widespread criticism.

A 27-year-old woman in Alabama has been charged with manslaughter after losing her unborn baby in a shooting.

Marshae Jones was five months pregnant when she was shot in the stomach by another woman, but it was Ms Jones who was arrested this week.

She was charged with manslaughter of her baby girl while the woman accused of shooting her walked free.

Police have said she was culpable because she started the fight that led to the shooting and failed to remove herself from harm’s way.

According to AL.com, Pleasant Grove police Lt. Danny Reid said at the time of the shooting: "The investigation showed that the only true victim in this was the unborn baby."

Alabama is among 38 states that have foetal homicide laws recognising the foetus as a victim in cases of violence against a pregnant woman.

Pro-choice groups have condemned the state for pressing charges on Ms Jones, saying it demonstrates how Alabama's new restrictive abortion laws can affect women even in non-abortion cases.

But the county district attorney's office has stated  that the new abortion law played no role in the case.
