A historic address was made in the Oireachtas this morning.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has addressed the Irish Government.

It's the first time the leader of a country at war has spoken to both houses.

He made the address remotely, with the Ukrainian ambassador to Ireland and Ukrainian refugees also present for the speech.

During his speech, he thanked the Irish for their support they've shown to the people of Ukraine and for not staying neutral in the face of the war.

He also asked the Government to go further with sanctions against Russia.

He then added that Ireland should push for EU membership for Ukraine.

Last month he appeared to criticise Ireland's response to the crisis at an EU summit, seeming to refer to Ireland's support as being "almost" there .

Ukraine's ambassador to Ireland has said his comments were misinterpreted.

Taoiseach Micheál Martin also added after Zelenskyy's speech that Ireland would continue to stand by Ukraine through the war.

"Russia will have to live with the shame of what they've done in Ukraine for generations. Those responsible will be held to account. We're with Ukraine and I'm certain Ukraine will prevail. We are not politically or morally neutral in the face of war crimes" he stated in his speech.

Ukrainian prosecutors have said they are investigating 4,684 alleged Russian war crimes, after the dead bodies of civilians were discovered in Bucha.

The figures were released yesterday and showed that an estimated 167 children have also died as a consequence of Russia's invasion, according to prosecutors.

They described towns surrounding Kyiv as a "tortured region from hell".
