Wine is actually a disinfectant for germs.

We've all heard of the benefits of drinking red wine - the antioxidants in the tipple are said to protect against coronary heart disease and cancer.

But new research has found new health benefits to sipping both red and white vino.

Scientists at The University of Pavia in Italy have discovered that wine can prevent sore throats and dental plaque.

They examined the antibacterial action of a number of commercial red and white wines.

They found the compounds in wine kill 99.9 per cent of oral streptococci, which is responsible for tooth cavity development, and S. pyogenes, which is responsible for pharyngitis.

The authors wrote:

"Several studies suggest that moderate wine consumption has beneficial effects on human health.

"Findings show that wine is active against oral streptococci and S. pyogenes and suggest that it enhances oral health."
