The government has this week launched an information campaign on face masks and coverings.

It advises us to wear them in places and situations where it is more difficult to stick to the two metre social distancing guideline, for example in shops or on public transport.

The Taoiseach has also not ruled out making it mandatory to wear face coverings in public.

As part of The Lift's 'Tell Me Why', Dr. Maitiú Ó Tuathail has answered some of the most common questions about face masks and coverings.

He highlights how they are an important part of the fight against the spread of coronavirus, but are only effective if they're worn and handled properly.

Top tips on wearing a face mask or covering

-Wash your hands for 20 to 30 seconds before handling.

- Hold it by the ear ties when putting it on and taking it off.

- Do not touch or readjust it while wearing.

- Reusable ones need to be washed in a 60° wash.
