A recent Tampax tampon TV ad has been banned in Ireland.
Chief Executive of the Advertising Standards Authority of Ireland Orla Twomey defended their decision to ban the ad saying the scale of complaints "would indicate that it has caused widespread offence".
The ad addressed how tampons should be inserted in a mock chat-show setting, with the host telling the audience "You gotta get 'em up there girls".
The ad then has a pair of hands showing how to prepare a tampon with a voice-over saying "Not just the tip, up to the grip".
The ASAI received 84 complaints in regard to the ad calling it "offensive, crude, vulgar, disgusting, unnecessary, embarrassing, distasteful, coarse, grotesque, inappropriate and over-descriptive."
The ASAI upheld the complaints, saying the ad caused general offence.
However, they didn’t agree it was demeaning to women, was unsuitable for children, or included sexual innuendo.
P&G, the company who make Tampax said they believed in
"normalising the conversation around periods through awareness, information and education"
"The light-hearted advert had centred around a very common usage question and the intent was to educate people on how to use the product", they added.
