The site of the former mother and baby home in Tuam will be fully and forensically excavated to recover the remains of children buried there and where possible identify them and arrange reburial.

The remains of hundreds of children are feared to be buried at the site.

This afternoon, cabinet approved the measure after it was recommended by the Minister for Children.

"Significant quantities" of human remains were discovered at the site of the former Bon Secours Mother and Baby Home last year.

Minister Katherine Zappone says every reasonable effort will be made to locate and recover the remains of all children buried in Tuam.

She says her department will lead the process.

The actions to be taken include:

  • A phased forensic investigation and recovery of the juvenile remains in so far as is possible;
  • The use of systematic on-site “ground-truthing” and test excavations to effectively locate potential burials;
  • The forensic analysis of any recovered remains and, where possible, individualisation and identification;
  • Arrangements for a respectful burial and memorialisation and the appropriate conservation of the site.
