Somebody has a lot of explaining to do!

People in a small town in Florida were baffled when an alert was issued for a zombie outbreak.

It happened during a power outage in Lake Worth at around 2am on Sunday, May 20th.

The Palm Beach Post reports that the outage lasted less than 30 minutes, but residents were shocked to discover that an alert also contained a warning about zombies.

The alert read:

"Power outage and zombie alert for residents of Lake Worth and Terminus. There are now far less than seven thousand three hundred and eighty customers involved due to extreme zombie activity. Restoration time uncertain."

While we're sure a few people lost their s**t, the majority of Lake Worth folk knew it was a hoax - especially as Terminus is an area in zombie TV show, The Walking Dead.

And you know, the fact that zombies don't exist...

Lake Worth officials said someone altered the automated message. You don't say!

In a statement, Ben Kerr, the city’s public information officer, said:

"We are looking into reports that the system mentioned zombies. I want to reiterate that Lake Worth does not have any zombie activity currently and apologise for the system message."
