Tributes pour in for father of two who tragically lost his life in a house fire in Limerick city this morning.

Seamus Houlihan, aged in his 80s, was discovered at his home in Keyes Park in Southill by his son, who was returning home in the early hours of this morning.

The city and county fire and rescue service sent 3 units to battle the blaze which broke out at around 1.30AM.

It's thought that an electrical fault caused the fire and Gardai removed a clothes dryer from the scene for further investigation.

Mr Houlihan was elected to Limerick City Council in 1998, and was a well-known advocate for senior citizens. He was also an active member of the Irish Senior Citizens’ Parliament national organisation.

Labour TD and Former Minister for Education, Jan O'Sullivan, said Mr Houlihan was a champion of rights for the elderly.

Speaking to the Irish Mirror, she said, “Seamus was a very good public representative and a very nice man. After he stopped being a councillor he was involved in the senior citizens parliament, lobbying politicians about senior citizens rights.”

“He was a real mark on the Southill community and he’ll be sadly missed by everyone.”
