Officers are keeping their eyes out for the culprit.

Someone placed googly eyes on a historic statue in Savannah, Georgia and the police are now involved.

It might seem like an over the top move but authorities claim "it's no laughing matter".

"Who did this?!" asked the City of Savannah Government Facebook page after the plastic eyes appeared on the monument to Revolutionary War commander Nathanael Greene.

"It may look funny but harming our historic monuments and public property is no laughing matter. In fact, it's a crime."

"We are hoping to find the person responsible! If you have information, please call Savannah Police Department."

The post has unsurprisingly gone viral, with people taking the mick out of city officials for investigating the incident.

One person posted: "I always wanted to visit Savannah, but now that I see how unsafe it is, no thanks! I'll consider it once they catch this psychopath. Is the FBI involved yet?"

Other brilliant comments include: "Who is Nathaniel Greene? Never mind. I'll Googly him." and "Don't vandal-eyes."
