New research has found the chances of marrying someone from your own occupation are quite high.

The Central Statistics Office (CSO) analysed the Census 2016 to figure out who marries whom.

Researchers cross-referenced spouses and jobs and discovered some interesting trends.

For women, the top occupation with the highest percentage who married within their own field are farmers.

80 per cent of female farmers married other farmers.

That's followed by publicans - 62 per cent of female publicans got hitched to other publicans.

In third place are taxi drivers at 58 per cent, followed by Gardaí at 49 per cent and doctors at 36 per cent.

For men, the top occupation with the highest percentage who married within their own field are nursery nurses and assistants.

57 per cent of male nursery nurses and assistants tied the knot with other nursery nurses and assistants.

In second place are nurses and midwives - 55 per cent of male nurses and midwives married other nurses and midwives.

That's followed by florists at 39 per cent, primary and nursery teachers at 38 per cent and doctors at 35 per cent.

The study found people are most likely to get married within their own profession.

However, the analysis indicated that people are also likely to marry people in other jobs that they work closely with, or where they share similar working hours.
