Poor Nigel...

Imagine finding the love of your life... falling head over heals... you propose, get married...

Then you find out she's made of concrete.

Well, that's exactly what happened to a lonely Gannet called Nigel.

Who has sadly just died alone after falling love with a concrete bird on Mana IslandNew Zealand.

Bit of background.

A colony of fake birds was placed there in 1976, in an attempt to attract real Gannets and start an actual colony on the island.

However, they failed to attract any attention and were moved to another island in 2012, where they had some more success.

Then, enter Nigel the bachelor in 2015.

After laying eyes on his concrete beauty, building her a nest and woo-ing her with his mating rituals, the pair proceeded to spend three happy years together.

Ironically, just before Nigel passed away, some more actual real-life Gannets decided to show up.

But sadly it was just too late for our Romeo...

Ranger Chris Bell - who  found him last week - said: ‘'This just feels like the wrong ending to the story. He died right at the beginning of something great.’'

Really hits you right in the feels.

Goodbye Nigel! This is for you buddy...
