Ophelia expected to be worst storm to hit Ireland in 50 years

Hurricane Ophelia is expected to be the worst storm to hit Ireland in over 50 years.

Met Éireann's issued a status red weather alert for the entire country and is advising people to stay inside tomorrow, Monday October 16th.

Violent and destructive gusts are forecast with all areas at risk and in particular the southwest and south in the morning, and eastern counties in the afternoon.

Heavy rain and storm surges along some coasts will result in flooding.

There is potential risk to lives.

Schools:

All schools will be closed tomorrow to ensure children's safety.

Universities & Colleges:

All colleges and universities will close tomorrow.

Airports:

Airports around the country are warning passengers to expect disruption to flights and cancellations.

People are being advised to check online before making their way to the airports.

Aer Arann flights to the Aran Islands have been cancelled.

Rail:

Irish Rail services are set to operate as normal.

However, there may be some delays.

Bus:

Bus Éireann's cancelled all services nationwide from 5am until 2pm.

Ferries:

Irish Ferries and Stena Line have issued a number of cancellations to their Dublin and Holyhead services.

Some ferry services from Ros an Mhíl in Galway to the Aran Islands have been cancelled tomorrow.

Electricity Supply:

ESB Netwroks is warning customers to be prepared for power outages.

They're advising customers to:

-Have plenty of food and water available.
-Have torches with spare batteries available.
-Make sure your phone is charged and, if possible, have a phone charger at hand for your car.
-Please check that elderly or vulnerable relatives and neighbours are prepared to be without electricity.
-If you have electric gates, please check you know how to work them manually.

If you come across fallen wires, never touch or approach these as they are live and extremely dangerous.

Tourists:

Visitors should avoid Ballycroy National Park in Mayo, Connemara National Park and Coole Park Nature Reserve in Galway, and Dromore Woods Nature Reserve in Clare for the duration of the weather warning.

Heavy rainfall is expected and there will be a risk of injury from falling trees and wind blown debris.
