The smell of turkey and ham on the table, the box sets, the selection boxes...

There are certain Christmas traditions that just aren't the same if you're living abroad.

Whether it's grabbing a pint at the local, midnight mass or heading to the races on St Stephen’s Day, some festive habits are sorely missed when living overseas.

Irish Christmas markets, the Panto or a Christmas Day swim are also up there on the list.

According to a survey by Paddy Box - watching the Late Late Toy Show and listening to Fairytale of New York are the most common things ex-pats do to feel closer to home at this time of year.

Of course, with heading to the local being such a strong tradition, Irish people abroad were also asked about the hangover cure and surprise surprise, the humble chicken fillet roll came out on top, with 28% of respondents saying they missed the oh-so Irish snack.

Speaking about the survey, Paddy Box founder Mark Loftus said

"Our survey findings demonstrate what a unique country Ireland is when it comes to our tastes, activities, and personality traits and this becomes even more apparent at Christmas time."

"It’s hard to sum-up what being Irish is in words but living abroad really drives our uniqueness home."
