The Irish owned pet-retailer has surveyed over 1,500 pet-parents in Ireland as part of its annual Puppy of the Year competition. The survey has unveiled that across the nation, the top-five most popular names for man’s best friend are:

  1. Luna
  2. Bailey
  3. Bella
  4. Cooper
  5. Teddy

Luna is up one place from last year, whilst Bailey has dropped one place.

Teddy has dropped from 4th to fifth place with new entries Bella in third place and Cooper in fourth in the country’s top five popular dog names.

Whilst the list of entrants included the traditional Max, Rex and Scooby, the poll showed a rising trend for names as Gaeilge with interesting Irish names like Púca, Súile, and Poigíní included.

Many of the county’s new four-legged friends are named after gods and mythical characters, for example, Athena, Ares, Zeus, Loki and Apollo.

Pet parents also gave a nod to designer brands, Dior and Coco plus some well know movie/ celebrity namesakes like Bowie, Wonka, Rambo, Indiana, Ice Cube and Simba.

‘Orca’, a Great Dane from Sligo, was the overall winner of the Petmania Puppy of the Year 2021 and has won over €1,500 worth of prizes.

The remarkable pooch is training to rescue whales, dolphins and seals, which inspired his name.

Ireland’s most popular breed is the Golden Retriever in the top spot, followed by Labradors, German Shepards, Cockapoos and Jack Russells.
