To regular users of Irish Rail's commuter services, the loss of the catering trolley was a huge blow during the pandemic.
Those long hauls on the train were only made worse by the tea and chocolate being ruthlessly taken away, with many holding out hope that once it was safe to do so, the mighty catering trolley would make a triumphant return.

But while many presumed the end of Covid restrictions would usher in such a return, Irish Rail have dealt a bit of a blow to passengers.

A statement on the operator's website reads:
"Iarnród Éireann regrets to inform customers that our catering providers (Rep of Ireland Intercity services) has advised that it is no longer able to provide catering services on Iarnród Éireann’s Intercity network.
We will quickly commence the process to tender for a new catering contract. However, this will mean that catering services are unlikely to be available on board until at least early 2023.
Customers may bring their own food and snacks on board, including from retail/food outlets at many of our stations.
We thank our customers for their patience, and apologise for any inconvenience caused.
Catering will be available on some of the Dublin to Belfast services."
So while one day our hero will likely return, it won't be today or tomorrow.
