An expert says we shouldn't store milk in the fridge door

Oops.

Let's set the scene: you bring in the groceries and are on the fridge goods.

This usually needs organisation, but there's probably a particular place you put one essential item: your carton of milk.

We bet that chunky item goes straight into the fridge door.

Well, apparently that's exactly what NOT to do.

Co-founder of OLIO - an app dedicated to connecting neighbours and businesses to prevent food waste - is  Tessa Clarke.

She gave some tips to Dublin Live, and one of our main takeaways from it is how to prolong the shelf-life of milk.

And it's all to do with the shelf you put it on.

Putting the likes of dairy products at the back of the fridge will actually help them last longer, so obviously with the fridge door being very much at the front, it's not the ideal location.

But we're not sure we'll change our ways, as milk is that type of product that would leak if not left upright.

Here are some of other tips shared:

  • Don't store tomatoes in the fridge - it makes the flesh go soft, so instead, store them in a bowl on the counter/table.
  • For bread: avoid buying sliced and instead buy whole loaves, wrap them in reusable cotton bags and store in an airtight container.
  • To keep bananas fresh for a few extra days, wrap them in tinfoil or a beeswax wrap.

According to OLIO, one third of all food produced globally goes to waste, so maybe we should do our bit to help reduce that number.
