Extra fees could be on the way for those sharing a Netflix login with family and friends.

New measures, to be trialed in Chile, Costa Rica, and Peru will see users on Standard and Premium accounts able to add 'sub accounts' for up to two people they don’t live with at an additional cost.

It's thought the cost will be around 2,380 pesos in Chile, 2.99 US dollars in Costa Rica, and 7.9 sol in Peru.

For years now, people have being sharing their accounts with people outside their household.

And up until recently, Netflix themselves had taken a fairly lax approach to dealing the password sharing among users.

But now the streaming giant has said the extent of account sharing has started to effect its ability to produce new films and TV shows.

A Netlfix spokesperson said:

"We’ve always made it easy for people who live together to share their Netflix account, with features like separate profiles and multiple streams in our Standard and Premium plans.

"While these have been hugely popular, they have also created some confusion about when and how Netflix can be shared. As a result, accounts are being shared between households - impacting our ability to invest in great new TV and films for our members.

"So for the last year we’ve been working on ways to enable members who share outside their household to do so easily and securely, while also paying a bit more."

The news comes just weeks after Netflix announced major price hikes of at least 12 percent for users.
