Couples are advised to adopt a 'safe word' to flee overwhelming family Christmas events.

That's the opinion of relationship experts, in order to survive a busy social calendar during the festive period.

Relationship coach, David Kavanagh, says rehearsing a code word can get you out of a tricky situation:

"An escape or an exit strategy or a code word that they can just flag between them to give them that sense of ok, this person, my partner knows I'm upset now were going to leave soon and everything's going to be ok."

The relationship coach also recommends rehearsing how to deal with a 'challenging' friend or family member this Christmas

He believes that rehearsing how you may handle the encounter can be beneficial.

David also says preparing for 'toxic' guests is half the battle, and knowing who or what is triggering:

"Have the conversations as soon as possible about the potential trigger points or trigger people that you might encounter over the Christmas period."
