Instagram users have been slammed for posing at a Famine memorial in New York.
People have flocked to the Irish Hunger Memorial Park in the city for selfies and photoshoots while one person even posed semi-naked for a snap.
The memorial in Battery Park City is dedicated to the one million Irish people who died during the Great Famine. It was opened in 2002 to raise awareness of the Great Hunger and people who emigrated from Ireland to the United States between 1845 and 1852.
Recently, it's become a hotspot for Instagram photoshoots with influencers favouring the tunnel beneath it, which is wrapped with illuminated stripes of text and limestone. Adrian Flannelly, the Irish cultural liaison officer for the Irish Hunger Memorial, told The Times that he's urging visitors to consider the history of the memorial:
"You have those who basically just don’t care to have any affiliation or association [with the memorial]... They don’t know the significance of it.”
He added that using the memorial for any kind of risque photos was "totally disgusting".
“Not only is it disrespectful, but they should be thrown out. They wouldn’t do that in the cathedral or their own church or mosque or whatever. If they’re not going to do it in Macy’s window, then why do it there?"
