The cost of on-campus rent at a number of third-level institutions, including NUI Galway and UCD, is to rise by up to 12 per cent this year.
The Union of Students in Ireland is calling for a review of the grants payments to bring them in line with the increased cost of living.
The union's president Lorna Fitzpatrick says a lot of students need more money:
"Different financial support like SUSI hasn't been reviewed since 2011, when it was actually cut. That was...during austerity obviously, and then as the cost of living has continued to increase, the financial supports available haven't increased in line with it."
