Person writing at a desk. The government have been facing calls to cancel this year's Leaving Cert examinations in June.

If schools are closed until St Patrick's Day - Leaving Cert exams can still go ahead.

That's according to education expert Arthur Godsil, which follows calls to scrap the exams in June.

Taoiseach Micheál Martin said yesterday that every option will be considered when it comes to the Leaving Cert.

Godsil, a former school principal and now education spokesperson, says the exams should still go ahead - but with some changes.

"The first point really is to increase the choice so that nobody is disadvantaged," Godsil said.

"The second thing I have is that I don't believe there's a necessity to have the length of papers that are there."

Godsil's main two recommendations are to "shorten the exams" and "increase the choice level."

The government have been unable to give a timeline for when schools will reopen.

There have been claims schools could stay closed until St Patrick's Day.

Education Minister Norma Foley is facing calls to cancel the exams outright, but no decision has been made.
