There has been a significant increase in Islamophobia, according to the chair of the Irish Muslim Council.

Shaykh Dr. Umar Al-Qadri says leaders in the community are assessing their security after he was knocked unconscious in Dublin last week.

Gardaí are investigating the alleged assault in Tallaght after the cleric suffered facial injuries and broken teeth.

Dr. Al-Qadri says he was lured to the area on the pretense of carrying out a blessing for a wedding.

"Attacks happen and have happened in the past on individuals, but this attack was a attack that was carefully planned."

Dr Al-Qadri explained that "the perpetrators not only called me and invited me to come to an address, they actually went through the steps of filling in an application form."
