It's believed a campaign will commence this Autumn
The Irish Times is reporting that Irish President Michael D. Higgins will announce his intention to seek a second term in office.
Politicians who support a second term for the popular leader have reportedly been told to prepare for a campaign this Autumn.
While the President's spokesperson stopped short of confirming that he would certainly be seeking another term. It's believed the official announcement will fall between the referendum to repeal the eighth amendment and the quieter news cycle in August.
It's thought that President Higgins will be challenged by an opponent if he does in fact stand for re-election.
Independent senator Gerard Craughwell believes he has the support of the 20 Oireachtas members he requires for candidacy.
