Staff at a funeral home received the fright of their lives when the woman opened her eyes.

A woman has given staff at a funeral home an almighty scare, after she was declared dead, only to be found alive just an hour later.

Paramedics were called to 20-year-old Timesha Beauchamp's home in Detroit, in the US, on Sunday, where attempts to revive her seemed to be unsuccessful.

Her 'remains' were then moved to a funeral home, only for staff to discover she was still very much alive, when Timesha's eyes opened.

"They would have begun draining her blood to be very, very frank about it," the family's lawyer, Geoffrey Fieger, who had been hired to identify the body told WXYZ-TV.

Inevitably, questions have been raised to to whether all the appropriate protocols were followed in the case.

"Our staff confirmed she was breathing" and called a emergency medical crew, the funeral home said via CBS news.

"The Southfield Fire and Police Departments followed all appropriate city, county and state protocols and procedures in this case," the department said.

It said an investigation was underway and vowed "to provide as much transparency as possible."

Ms Beauchamp is now in a critical condition in hospital.
