The AA is warning that the Government must take action and give some help to young adults who are keen to get on the road.

The organisation points out that the high cost of motor insurance is a serious issue that needs to be addressed.

Its Director of Consumer Affairs Conor Faughnan says a survey of more than 5,000 Irish motorists  found more than half believe young drivers cannot afford to get started:

"For people who are high-risk in insurance terms for any reason, young drivers, returning emigrants, people who have a claim outstanding, people with penalty points, any of those non-standard risks are really suffering badly.  The mere fact that we've got used to high insurance prices doesn't make them acceptable."
