There's been widespread criticism of a caricature of the Sinn Féin leader in a newspaper over the weekend.
This disgraceful depiction of Mary Lou McDonald as a witch is a cynical, misogynistic trope that resonates at the power core of all women.
I am asking all politicians to condemn this sexist and hurtful depiction of the leader of the largest political party on our island./ pic.twitter.com/VEaCi79TsB

The cartoon of Mary Lou McDonald in the Sunday Independent isn't an acceptable way to depict any woman in politics, according to the National Women's Council of Ireland.
The cartoon which depicts the Sinn Fein leader as a witch has been labelled as sexist.
Spokesperson for the National Women's Council of Ireland, Emma De Souza, says these actions prevent women from entering politics.
Meanwhile, Mary Lou herself has responded on Twitter.
We are the granddaughters of the witches you could not burn - Deal with it #womenpower
