If you have one of these iPhone or Android models, WhatsApp won't work on them next year.

WhatsApp officials have confirmed that from January 31st, they will restrict some phones from accessing the popular messaging app.

According to a statement, it reads that "some features might stop functioning" when updates are brought in next year.

The app has recommended that mobile phone users download the latest iOS and Android software in advance of the change.

iPhone users can go to Settings > General > Information to find out if there's updates available.

Android users can go to Settings > About Phone to see which version their phone is operating with.

When the new WhatsApp update drops in January, these devices will be affected:

WhatsApp on iPhones

iPhone's running the software iOS 8 or earlier will not work with WhatsApp at the end of January.

WhatsApp will work on iOS 9, so here's a list of iPhones that can support it:

  • iPhone 6/6 Plus – Can update to iOS 9
  • iPhone 5/5s/5c – Can update to iOS 9
  • iPhone 4s – Can update to iOS 9
  • iPhone 4 and older – Cannot update to iOS 9

WhatsApp on Android

Android users that use version 4.0.3 of android software will lose their access to WhatsApp.

Version 4.0.3 was released in 2011. It will also affect those using Android 2.3.7.

If you have a Motorola Droid Razr or Samsung Galaxy S2 - later software cannot update on those, so the service may be affected.

There's still plenty of time to download new updates, as the software changes won't come into effect until January 31st.
